Some of my thoughts

The author, Kevin M. Coan, of the above article is a piano teacher with dozens years of teaching experience and was an instructor in piano pedagogy. I though the article presents great guidelines for the parents who are deciding whether or not to start their children’s music instrument learning early.

I have reservation on his No. 1 factor, in paragraph two. Ten-minute TV watching or story-listening does not equal to 10-min lesson/practice. Many kids can take one-hour art class, but have trouble to sit still more than 10 minutes at piano lessons. The ten-minute test is too short. I would triple it to 30-minutes.

As Chinese parents, we are more eager to start our kids’ lesson early than our counterparts of other races. It is often due to the fact we have the impression that kids in China start early. And we forget the fact that kids raised up here do not handle high-pressure teaching as well as the ones in China. I would urge you not to start lesson early unless: 1. You have an exceptionally gifted child; 2. The parent is committed to sit through and help your kid every and each the lesson and every and each practice session. (Better yet, hide your frustration away from your kid.)
