outsiders don't really know what happened

I don't understand. If he really wants to call his dad, why doesn't he call from a cell phone, an office phone, a pay phone, a friend's phone... Write a letter maybe? What does his wife fear that she would lose to an old man? It's hard to think that anyone would want to be so controlling. The story is probably more complicated than what we were let to know.
