Short answer: usually no — a spouse does not automatically inherit from their spouse’s parents’ estate.
How it typically works
When someone passes away, their estate goes to:
- Their spouse
- Their children
- Then other relatives
In-laws (like a son-in-law or daughter-in-law) are not in the default line of inheritance.
When a spouse
could
receive it
There are a few exceptions:
1. Named in a will
If the parents explicitly include the spouse in their will, then yes.
2. Through their partner
If:
- The parents leave everything to their child (your spouse), and
- Your spouse later passes away
Then you may inherit indirectly through your spouse
3. Joint ownership / trusts
If assets are:
- in a trust
- or jointly owned
Then rules may differ.
