I have many Jewish friends, none of them can read or write Hebrew. For them, even their great grand parents don't speak Hebrew.

Actually Hebrew disappeared a long time ago. It was until the establishment of Isreal, the government organized the Robbies and religious leaders to revive Hebrew. The new immigrants to Isreal are required to learn Hebrew to be nationalized.
