你觉得公司sponsor的MBA值得读吗? -Croissant_22

It certainly sounds attractive to have sponsored full time MBA opportunities with everything paid by company (tuition, living expenses and flights home etc. ), especially in the eyes of 紫檀妈s - imaging everyone rises up sing “what a wonderful world”! Moreover, unlike many others in MBA programs, you don’t bother time and time again polishing resume or making up something before sending out hundreds of applications and hoping an employer will respond dangling with an offer.  What you need to do is just relaxing, networking and sharing photos of a newly discovered cocktail among former coworkers and your jealousy overworked former boss. You’ll get a nice but not great rise when you graduate, then the job is familar without too much pressure to catch up.  Consulting job path is relatively defined and, provided no screwing up, after 5 - 8 year, your salary will double with stepwise promotions. From there, every rise will be great along with responsibility.

Here are negatives. Although only signing up working 3 yrs after MBA in exchange for the money, you probably find it is quite sticky. There are cases of people moving to run a department in other companies after they are free but most will likely stay in consulting. It’s not a bad choice however for lots of people forever providing suggestions but never making any decisions is not what they like.  Another unavoidable thing is that constant travel is not fun when you are not twenty some young, it’s even more an issue for girls for obvious reasons. These two things make people think twice before signing up, and in most cases, upon seeing opportunities plenty it’s not hard to say “thanks, but no”. That's probably one the reasons why the MBA offer is very generous and flexible.

Perhaps location of offices should be mentioned. Large consulting companies strategically have offices throughout the country, say finance in NYC, tech in SF/LA, commodities/trading in Chicago, energy in Houston, auto in Detroit, tourist/gambling in Miami…. There are plenty cases with cross functional teams still the geographics dominates. If you are assigned to gambling, there is little chance to live close to SF though you may reserve a hotel room for weeks in LV 。

With trillions invested and in pipeline in tech, it’s not hard to guess where future employment opportunities are. It’s not a secret these days that MBA is nice to have but not required in tech companies. If you start a job in tech while a coworker starts MBA, your salary will likely be more when coworker graduate and return to original consulting. In short tech considers relevent working experiences more than traditional. People would argue opposite is true but you should be aware of already, just look at reality.

OK enough of talking. Good luck to everyone considering consulting for career.
