The Real Story (The Origin)
While the story is often told as a joke, it is believed to be based on a real event involving Charles Proteus Steinmetz, a brilliant electrical engineer, and Henry Ford.[2][3][4]
As the story goes, a massive generator at Ford's River Rouge plant broke down, and none of Ford's engineers could fix it.[2][3][4][5][6][7][8] Steinmetz was called in.[4][5][7] He allegedly spent two days just listening to the generator and making calculations on a notepad.
Eventually, he asked for a ladder, climbed up, and made a chalk mark on the side of the generator. He told the engineers to remove a plate at that spot and replace 16 windings from the field coil. They did, and the generator worked perfectly.
Steinmetz later sent a bill for $10,000.[1][2][4][7] When Ford asked for an itemized invoice, Steinmetz allegedly wrote:
Making chalk mark on generator: $1
Knowing where to make mark: $9,999[1][2][4][6][7][8]
