The black girl said that she made her choice to be different and go for opera. But she thanked her mom for introducing classic music to her.

I am sure there are other black kids in her neighborhood that were introduced to classic music but decided to go for pop, either because they truly enjoyed pop much better, or because they felt more comfortable being the same as the kind of people they know.
