My son was in ESL in K, and was kicked out of it in 1st grade. He was the best spelling winner in 1st grade. and got into gifted program in 2nd grade.
Accoeding to my son's experience, he was happy in the ESL class. The teacher was very nice, and always gave out tons of stickers, and making projects. He also learned some Spanish in that class, the teacher know Spanish, and he was trying to teach other kids and the teach Chinese!
Another kid I know who was also in ESL, is now in gifted class as well.
I think you need to visit and talk to the ESL teacher, to see how you feel about the teacher. For my son's experience, it was a value added program, and he did need extra help in English back then, and the result was wonderful! I think he won't be able to win spelling without help of decoding on English words that he learned in that class.
Just my 2 cents.
I think it depends on the ESL teacher and school policy
