Eleven states, including Texas, do not allow nurse practitioners to practice independently.

States with full practice authority allow nurse practitioners to treat patients without supervision from another health care provider. States with reduced practice authority may limit nurse practitioners' abilities to perform certain tasks without supervision. States with restricted practice authority require nurse practitioners to sign a contract or other agreement with a supervising health care provider before they can evaluate or treat patients.
