老太太 was just being nice -- you took it too literally.

Because you complained about lack of money, she told you 没有钱是父母提供给孩子的最好礼物. If you have lots of money, she may just say 有钱是好礼物.

The point she was trying to make is that everything has a good side, and we should never be upset by seemingly adverse conditions. If you take what she said in the literal way, it could be misleading.
