My suggestion:

1st, take your kid to colleges close to your home during weekends--some of LAC and big universities. ( I niticed you don't know much about Liberal Art Colleges (LACs)). You can get some his/her opinions about what type of college he/she likes--big one or small one, urban area or countryside.

Once you have ideas,the next step, you can take him/her to specific colleges, the type he/she likes, so he can talk to people there, students or professors.

Finally you can read some college websites, and recommend good ones to him so he/she read. This might be his choice for college he/she is going to apply.
