A man in custody at a San Francisco jail died over the weekend, according to city officials.
Officials with the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner identified the inmate as 23-year-old Nenya Edjah.
Christian Kropff, a spokesperson for the San Francisco Sheriff’s Office, said deputies and jail staffers found Edjah injured from a suicide attempt at County Jail No. 3 and performed immediate lifesaving measures. Edjah was transferred to San Francisco General Hospital, where he later died of his injuries, Kropff said.
Sheriff’s officials declined to release any further information, citing an open investigation.
State records show seven people have died while in custody of San Francisco jails between 2017 and 2021. Of these deaths, four were listed as natural, two were accidental and one was due to suicide.
