Not paying employees for their work is ILLEGAL! Minimum wage laws exist because it is ILLEGAL. Having people work for you and not paying them is known as slavery, and it too is ILLEGAL. Don’t do it!! You are only asking for trouble and a possible jail sentence.
If a company CEO does not have the money to pay employees they must let them go, reorganize their business, and then start anew.
Sleazy CEOs reduce their employees and hire contractors to the do the work, and then don’t pay the contractors. This makes it a legal matter between the company and the contractors which can end up in court. The risk here is that the contractor may be reclassified as an employee making the company’s problem go from a commercial one with contractors to one involving the state who wants payroll taxes, unemployment, workers’ compensation, and income taxes. Basically, you go from bad to worse.
Sneaky CEOs will try to run a middle course by reducing wages to a minimum wage and issuing the employee shares in the company. Where they mess up is the taxman considers this compensation and wants their payroll taxes, unemployment, workers’ compensation, and income taxes nonetheless. More often than not the company forgets this detail and gets into trouble.
The simple fact of life is you must have the means to realize your ambitions. No means, ambitions remain unmet. If you try to go around this fact then you go directly to jail, do not pass “Go”, do not collect $200.
