Safety-wise, that's true.

 

But if the driver is your co-worker, and you occupy the front-passenger seat before your boss gets into the car ('s backseat,) polish your resume afterwords.

(If the boyfriend were wise, he should invite the father to use the front-passenger seat.  Or, better yet, he should be the driver, to show his willingness to take charge.  If the father realized that he was a visitor/guest there, sitting in the backseat was a matter of course.)
