There are people who feel "left out" by globalization and an ever integrating world, and they question the ideals and fundamentals of western democracy as the economic divide deepens. These people become disillusioned and turn to extremisms. They also tend to decry mainstream media and tend to buy into conspiracy theories as they believe the "system" is rigged against themselves.
Examples abound and what's happening in the US is not unique: some have turn to religionious extremism, some turn to Sanders, some turn to Trump. Worldwide, we also see the rise of extremetism in many nations. It is a worrying trend.
