"Since the emergence of CSRankings.org, I actually care much less about the US News ranking. I’ve been telling all my colleagues and every student I meet about CSRankings.org. To me, sheer productivity at the top publication venues should be the only way to quantify the strength of departments, not a opaque calculation based on the opinions of a few. It’s much harder to game than both reputation or citation counting rankings (witness the rapid rise of King Abdulaziz University to #13 in the US News rankings, well-above Waterloo, Princeton, Georgia Tech, CMU, UCSD, and #46 ranked UIUC!). It is seriously non-trivial to “game” the system by pumping out SOSP/OSDI or PLDI papers.

It is difficult to argue that CSRankings is trading volume for quality, when you consider that only 3 conferences per research area make the cut. If CSRankings encourages you to optimize for “quantity,” by submitting to SOSP or NSDI or SIGCOMM, then where would we submit if we were optimizing for “quality”?

So I’d rather spend time working on my research than worry about US News. Good research will get published and generate impact at top places, and a reasonable sample of that will be captured by CSRankings.org."
