Top science summer camps such as SSP and MIT's RSI definitely help college application.
But admissions to these summer camps are very competitive (admission rates are about 10% or lower). I recall that applications to these summer camps start very early in the year (something like January or February) , and they generally require SAT/ACT scores, high school transcripts, essays, and recommendation letters. Last summer my kid went to SSP's Astrophysics program in New Mexico for 6 weeks. At the end of the program, 3 schools went there to recruit and these 3 schools are MIT, Caltech, and Harvey Mudd. This past weekend, my kid told me that out of the 32 students (one from 人大附中) in SSP's Astrophysics last summer program in New Mexico, about 6 were accepted by Harvard, 5 by Stanford, 6 by MIT, 5 by Caltech, and 4 by Harvey Mudd (My numbers may not be accurate but they are not that much off. My daughter got them from their SSP Facebook group).
Note:
Students from low-icome families receive scholarships to attend SSP.
