1. These are the compensations of physicians at public academic medical centers, (hence the info is available). Usually they are afflicated with a medical school and have teaching and/or research responsibilities. Most physicians do not go into academic medicine with higher pay as their priority. Physicians in the private sectior could be paid much higher (and of course also potentially lower) depending on workload, locale, sucessfulness of the practice , their specialty, and whether the they have made partner.
2. The compensation of the 2nd physician is low for an emergency room physician. However a likely scenario is that this person has chosen to take a part-time position. Many ER physicians choose a flexible schedule, such as 3 months on and then 3 months, so they can pursue other interests during their time off.
