It is all about data and scalability.

A company like facebook, at the first stage, was about # of users. Once it became a daily staple for a sizable population, it has won out the competition war.

The second stage is about how to make money out of the user base. Advertising is the first thing that came to your mind and a low hanging fruit. Once the low hanging fruit was harvested, you need to do more granular works to keep customers for advertising business.

Now, Facebook hit the wall. Privacy laws do not allow Facebook to extend its tentacles. It is a pivotable point for the entire industry. To what extend you can scale your business?

I think Facebook may lose its competitive advantage over the other large techies if they couldn't reinvent itself and explore other businesses based on its infrastructure now.

If they couldn't reinvent itself, other like businesses will take over its users.
