1。UAL carried 143 million customers in 2016. Five year involuntary bump rate is 1.06 per 10k passengers on average. That translates into 15158 passengers bumped in 2016 alone.

2。At 5% overbooking rate, at $250 per ticket (9.1 billion rev for Q42016), the overbooking had generated $1.78 billion revenue in 2016.

3。Assume the compensation is at the cap of $1350 set by DOT. UAL would have only paid $20.5 million at maximum in 2016 vs 1.78 billion brought in，or slightly under 1.2% of the revenue from overbooking.
