作文一篇,感觉比他7年级写的稍微成熟一些了,虽然还是很稚嫩。

Where Dreams Begin

Her apartment was a small one. Its view over Tompkins Square always seemed to be impeded by a constant veil of fog, but that never mattered to her. Her life consisted of one writing desk, a bed, and a fridge that never seemed to have enough food.

It had taken three years to save up enough money from her job at the small coffee shop back home to be able to move to New York and try to pursue her aspiration of becoming a writer. Her mother had tried to disabuse her from what she called an “impossible dream”, but she could not listen. She knew that this was what she wanted and that this was where she wanted to be. Yet, for the past month, nothing had come to her. She only had a couple of measly pages to show for her labor. Everyday she would walk down Avenue A, through Tompkins Square, and down to the sea, but it would do nothing to help her. Even trips to Times Square did not help ameliorate the drought of ideas she was in. Her departure from New York and her dreams seemed immutable.

She found herself in a small restaurant on the corner of 10th and Avenue A. Tompkins Square Bagels, she thought. The bright, loud signs all seemed to blend together to her these days. She sat waiting, listening to the pitter patter of rain on the empty streets outside. There was no one else in the shop except the familiar clerk making her her regular order.

“How was your morning, miss?” He said as he brought her order to her.

“Fine, thanks for asking.”

He did not continue, but instead laid a flyer down onto her table.

Come meet Harper Lee, the genius behind To Kill a Mockingbird!
Rockefeller Center
Nov 7
7:00 PM

She stared at the paper, grabbed it, and left, leaving her bagel unfinished.

The trip to Rockefeller Center was a long and boring one. She sat in ennui until the cab driver dropped her off with a brusque “here we are”. She stepped into the high rise and took the elevator all the way to the top. She surreptitiously walked around the observatory, gazing around the skyscrapers of the Big Apple.

To her, this city seemed to be a city of aspirations, one where anyone with big dreams could come and try their hand at success. The city looked like those people, the huge buildings reaching up to the sky, each building seeming to get closer and closer. Yet, no building ever reached it. But despite that, she smiled to herself. She knew it was possible. She was going to meet one of the skyscrapers who touched the sky.

She squeezed her way through the crowd of inquiring people around Lee’s desk.

She needed Harper’s help. She needed her advice. She needed to ask her questions. She called Lee’s name, over and over, but she could not hear her. She tried to get her attention, but before she knew it, Lee was gone. She raced out the door, across the streets, into Times Square. Her last hope, seemingly gone forever. She almost collapsed then and there when an arm wrapped around her, keeping her steady.

She looked up to see Harper Lee smiling down at her.

“What is it, my dear? What is so urgent that calls for you to push yourself so hard?”

She pushed her couple of pages into Lee’s hands, muttering only a single word.

“Please.”

She stood there in anxiety, desperately watching Lee read her writing. Finally, after what seemed like decades, she handed back the papers.

“I can see infinite potential in you and your writing. Don’t allow your deadlines and worries fetter your writing. Write about what you want to, and how you want to. You are not writing for anyone else. Sleep and wake up tomorrow ready to put your ideas onto paper. You may not think others will enjoy it, but I guarantee that anything you write will strike people in their hearts.”

She gave her one last smile and got in the cab. She stood there stunned. Write what she wanted? She had never taken the thought seriously. Maybe this was the change she needed.

She smiled the whole way home.
