I had the same problem with you. Recently I bought this cable from amazon, it comes with software for PC and Mac. Connect the cable to your VCR, then the video will play on your computer, and you can save it in mp4 file format. You can choose to capture any part of the video for any length and save to file.  6 hours tape can be converted into ~2GB file.
