Dear Parents/Guardians,
As promised, I am writing you with more information about yesterday’s sad situation and our plan to support your students in the coming days. As I shared before, the student who died by suicide is a Gunn senior. I know we all grieve with his/her family and many good friends.
While we already have considerable prevention efforts in place including active monitoring of at-risk students, extensive counseling, our student Reach Out, Care, and Know organization, homework monitoring, and professional development efforts with teachers, we have plans to do more in the areas that directly link to student social emotional health. These areas include sleep deprivation education and management, a more formal approval process for students who want to take exceptionally challenging classes or heavy workloads, an independent research study of consistency in curriculum, instruction, assessment, grading and homework practices, tight monitoring to eliminate project and test “stacking”, additional professional development, and continuing our frequent and consistent messaging regarding the importance of students becoming thoughtful learners for a lifetime, instead of chasing A’s and APs.
The most important prevention activities, however, begin at home with serious discussions about what has happened at Gunn and what your children need to cope with the challenges they face. These are difficult conversations to have and we have posted some resources on our website that may be useful to you as you talk with your child.
Some of you may have heard about another tragic event in our community this afternoon at the Charleston tracks where an adult male died by suicide. Although the investigation is ongoing, this situation does not appear to have any connection to our schools. Regardless, the cumulative effect of these types of events is difficult to bear, making it important that we continue to support one another and others in the community with resources and compassion.
As I mentioned yesterday, our district and site staff along with our community partners have been working through the weekend to coordinate support for our students. Counselors from Kara, Adolescent Counseling Services (ACS), Asian Americans for Community Involvement (AACI), Cassy, Acknowledge Alliance, and Family and Children’s Services are partnering with us to assist with students and staff. Many will be at Gunn throughout the week or on call to provide additional counselors for any school where help is needed. If your son or daughter needs to talk with a caring adult at school, please encourage him or her to let their teacher or counselor know so they can be directed to the correct personnel on campus.
We know that as a community, we need time to discuss and process this event together. To that end, we are in the planning stage of creating a parent information night during the week of February 2nd for all PAUSD parents to come together and receive information, discuss concerns, share ideas, and provide support to one another. We will share the specific event details when they are available.
For your children,
Max McGee, Ph.D.
Superintendent
