Parents are not always right

Our upbringing made us believe the will power can overcome any obstacles, and the social Darwinism beliefs instilled in us made it even harder to sympathize and empathize with anyone who doesn't behave according to our social norms.  You definitely can say what you think but it will sound better if you presented it as a different perspective, not "the" perspective.  The key is keep the communication channel open.
