At age 11 he had moved from China to Des Moines, Iowa, and through a school science program he had the opportunity to work in a local lab that was researching gene therapy. His mentor gave him a piece of advice that has stuck with him ever since. “He told me I should work on things that are on the sexy side of practical,” recalls Zhang. “It was a good way to put it.
