At middle range school, a high SAT will stand out more

That's how you get notice, and (one way) how you get exceptional references.

If there are 20-30 kids scoring 2380-2400, a 2400 is less noted, of course, still noticeable.


At my kid's school, 30% of all students are national merit scholar semis,  25%+ are siemens/Intel or other top honors,

It is harder to stand out.

Of course she is still strong in absolute terms no matter where, but it is the relative strength which can make huge difference
