My son is 6th grade, and he is in the school district gifted program. He has the exact same issue with your son. He has made the good progress compares to the 5th grade time. I think you need to be patient, one steop each time. Writting down on the Planner is extremely important. Be Structural!!!
We checked for him in the Summer, he indeed has some borderline Attention DEfficit. We have had the struggle whether to let him try the Ritalin. Since he has made the progress, we decide to wait & see.
