I had excatly the same feelings for my D's math. It's a result of the US math enducation. I worried a while like u when she was in 5/6th grade. either you can help a lot or let it be, eventually it won't be too bad, from the score point of view.
Do not judge her math with a Chinese way ...that's what I learned these years
