I do think it helps.  If the fund is very prestigious it may be able to stay in his/her resume for his/her whole life.  He/she got a good mentor.  By the way, is the professor a MD or PhD or double D?  The higher the rank the professor is, the stronger the reference.  Like full professor who is well-known in the field and is also chairman or director of the department/center, etc.
