He will have homework from school next year. I remember when reaching 9th grade, my son started to work on lot of homework.
Let him play and enjoy. If you think the standard testing is important, buy a few preparation books and let him do some sample testing.
Do not ask him to study all the time. Strictly following the time table to complete the sample tests. Then let him play whatever he wants. Kids must play.
Let him try a level higher.
My son took real SAT on 7th grade and scored quite well (600 English 700 math).
