Among IVY schools, H & Y are known to have grade inflation, meaning relatively easy to get high GPAs. On the other hand, P & Penn (Wharton) are known to have tough grade deflation (curves), that means only a certain percentage (typically 15%) of students in a class can get "A"s. As a result, no matter how well you do (say, scoring 96 out of 100 total points), if 15% of the students in class did better than you, then you still can not get an "A". For example, the average GPA at Wharton is at merely 3.1-3.2. However, the recruiters and graduate and medical school admissions officers are well aware of this, and it will be taken into consideration in their decisions.
