本人的一点分析-以Harvard 为例
这个孩子在我看来是天才,门门考试满分,应该是很优秀的了,入藤校有很大的可能性.问题是正如大家所分析的那样,有可能但不能保证,要看运气.下面我就他进Harvard 为例做一点分析。
首先要看Harvard录取什么样的学生。下面是直接从Harvard website copy来的.
Applicants can distinguish themselves for admission in a number of ways.
1. Some show unusual academic promise through experience or achievements in study or research.
2. Many are "well rounded" and have contributed in various ways to the lives of their schools or communities.
3. Others are "well lopsided" with demonstrated excellence in a particular endeavor—academic, extracurricular or otherwise.
4. Still others bring perspectives formed by unusual personal circumstances or experiences.
Academic accomplishment in high school is important, but we also seek people with enthusiasm, creativity and strength of character.
Most admitted students rank in the top 10–15 percent of their graduating classes, having taken the most rigorous secondary school curriculum available to them.
从第一点看,这孩子的成绩表明他有unusual academic promise through achievements in study，这一点满足Harvard和其他任何学校的条件，但是不是满足这个条件就能被录取呢？结论是否定的，否则按成绩和考分来选不就得了，也有人报道过跟他类似情况的学生没被Harvard录取。可见这孩子仅有了一个必要条件。
从第二点看这孩子是不是"well rounded" 有没有have contributed in various ways to the lives of their schools or communities. 他有社区活动：为老人院表演钢琴，义务教导儿童学习国际象棋，但是和他类似经历的学生有吗？我想是有的。这里的关键是他的表演是一次性的还是长期的，在essay 里一定要表明他的与众不同点，是不是significant。类似他义务教导儿童学习国际象棋这件事。他做这些事有没有passion 很重要。而且他做这些事的动机如能反映在essay里并有感动人的话，可能加分。所以仅说他有社区活动，并说明不了问题。
从第三点看这孩子是不是"well lopsided"，他有课外活动：连续3年竞选成为学生教师联络员，但是和他类似经历的学生有吗？我想也是有的，这个没有显出他与别人不同之处，关键看他做了什么。他国际象棋和钢琴有得过全州冠军，但没有任何National 级别的活动和成绩有点不足。这一点没有distinguish他和其他学生。
此外他有没有having taken the most rigorous secondary school curriculum available。 他有四门AP. 从他的学习能力看，我认为那是少了一点。
从第四点看这孩子是不是bring perspectives formed by unusual personal circumstances or experiences. 这一点我没看出来。
最终的条件是：Academic accomplishment + enthusiasm + creativity + strength of character。
我只看到了Academic accomplishment，但是我没有看到enthusiasm，creativity，和 strength of character. 所以这孩子还要最少加一个条件才有希望进Harvard。另外Harvard看重Leadership，这孩子的Leadership 在我看来不明显。
结论：Waiting list
