You can write any topic in the personal essay as long as the essay shows who you are, what is your passion and why you are so special and unique. So if your son is really passionate in music, he should be able to write an excellent and touching essay about music just as you commented. Your idea of explaining why his grades in the 9th grade were not so good is unnecessary and inappropriate unless he (or the family) had tremendous hardship during that time period. I believe that your son will be accepted by his dream (or the best fit) schools. Wish your son the best in his college applications. Looking forward to hearing good news from you.
