The response only demonstrates the poster does not know anything about the undergraduate education in the US. I have no intention to respond all of his points but only funny one "如果一个大学的研究不强,本科教育也好不了那去,教授只上课没研究没Funding,能教出好学生? 教科书上的东西不难掌握, 谁都会看,研究项目和实验室才是学真本领的."
Does the poster know the liberal arts colleges like Amherst, Swarthmore, Williams and many more provide the best undergraduate eduation in this nation even though the focus of their faculty is not research? Does the poster know that 4 years undergraduate gradution rate for UCB is only in 60% range whereas the graduation rate for these LAC is in high 80% to 90% range? Does the poster know that many of these LAC are called the feeder schools for best professional schools? In terms of alumni achievements, for many years, only 50% to 60% range of UCB alimni who applied medical schools were successful. Do you know the percentage for some of the LAC? Please do some research before you spread false information around. In terms of alumni academic achievements that the poster is interested in, indeed, UCB has 25 Nobel winning alumni. However, if yoou break down the number, 9 Nobel laureates had their undergrad education from UCB. Do you know that 4 Nobel laureates had their undergrad education from Amherst and 5 had their undergrad education from Swarthmore? Do you know that UCB's undergrad population is over 25,000 whereas both Amherst and Swarthmore only has a population around 1,600 each? So number wise, UCB undergrad education is not as impressive as those from some of LAC and the achievement and quality of faculty research do not directly translate to the quality of the undergrad education. There is a reason why in US News undergraduate ranking UCB is constantly ranked outside of top 20.
