In 2010—2011 we anticipate awarding close to $158 million in need-based scholarship assistance to our students.
Our most recent program enhancement, announced in December of 2007, has dramatically reduced the amount we expect families to contribute to the cost of their student's Harvard education. We no longer require students to take out loans, and parents of financial aid recipients are asked to contribute on average from zero to ten percent of their annual income, with no contribution expected for families with incomes of under $60,000. Those parents with annual incomes of between $120,000 and $180,000 are asked to contribute an average ten percent of their income, with a declining percentage — from ten to zero — for parents with annual incomes between $120,000 and $60,000.
If your family income is less than $60,000, why you separate your family by living in China and US for 11 years? (Unless there are other reasons) Your son/daughter can get free ride anyway.
If your family income is between $60,000 $120,000, you only need to pay a declining percentage (less than 10%).
If between 120,000 - 180,000, you pay 10% of tuition.
I know several families that have same situation, they are very quiet about the money they got from school, only tell some close friends - smart?
The families that I know, their hu*****ands went to china start business around 8 years ago and their business has around 30 people now. They live in big house in shanghai or Beijing, take vacation around world every year. Drive luxury cars, etc. But they asked for financial aid and got it.
I also know one family, the family income is around $100,000 and their kid got need based aid which is $5000 less than the kid from above family from the same private school. They finally decided to choose the State school because it is free for their kid. (We all know $100,000 income is not rich)
The college's financial aid is fixed amount every year, like Harvard has $158 million/year (the other schools have much less). So if you get one, you are taking away other people’s chance.
For some greed people, no matter how rich they are, they still want more. 这跟wall street 那些人是不是一样。
For any kid that can get into one of HYPSM, they are great kids, no doubt about it. I don’t have any ill feeling towards the kid.
