Amy Chua has written an authentic, funny and self-deprecating parenting memoir. This is not a guide on how to raise your children, nor does she suggest that it is. And, contrary to some comments found on the internet, Chua does not declare anywhere in this book that the "Chinese" parenting model is superior. Rather, the book is a moving portrait of her evolution from her initially very strict parenting view to a more nuanced approach - as can be seen from the book's very cover in which she highlights how she was "humbled by a 13 year old." This is a hilarious, beautifully written, and touching story filled with love and high hopes for one's children (which pan out, as can be seen in the book and in the interviews Chua and her daughters have done). It is a wonderful read and I devoured it in a matter of hours. I highly recommend this book - the excerpts and articles about the book have generated a lot of publicity but do not capture the author's parenting evolution. Only Chua's witty, unflinchingly honest, and tongue-in-cheek descriptions throughout can convey this to her readers.
