I seriously think Chinese people brag so much out of an inferiority complex, and much of the reason why they hate Japan so much is because they just can't match them up, with all their size, resources, and all their 'might'.
This article may hold the key as to why Chinese people are so unremarkable in terms of innovation and creativity, a kid whose inner muse and desires have been crushed from an early age will never become anything admirable unless he or she breaks free of this dogmatic ideological prison in time, and the same goes for Chinese government and its people.
Chinese people may be very good at maths, but so it's my computer, and my computer is not more intelligent than I am, or anyone else, so just learning things blindly, never made anyone brilliant.
There has been lots of talk about China recently, but so far I haven't seen anything good coming out of there: opressive government, attacks and killings on Tibet, cheap, copycat low quality products and not many nobel prizes to be seen or artists (be it filmmaking, painting or even writing - most is unremarkable and easily forgotten) and the real geniouses are treated like garbage by the rest of China, like the one who was supposed to receive the nobel prize last year.
Then of course you have Chinese government supporting companies of vastly inferior quality (like Baidu) as opposed to Google and making restrictions in how people get information or get educated, like this mother does, hampering their free thinking.
I think this arrogant attitude of theirs coupled with bogus nationalistic pride for a government that doesn't deserve it will in time be China's demise, unless things get better. I believe in Chinese people's potential (I like Hong Kong, Taiwan and Singapore) but China (or Chinese mothers) are not in position to be teaching anything to anyone so far.
She does make a good point that parents should inculcate some displine in kids, that's very true, but not a draconic households where kids live in disciplinary misery.
We will see how China goes, my guess is that they will do very well for a while (like Spain did in the past) but because of their mentality, oppresive government and just plain wrong ideology they will probably collapse soon enough (like Spain did in the past)
If I had to bet on Asian, it would be South Korea, Singapore, Taiwan, Japan, or even Malaysia, but with China, I am not impressed.
