many use timeout as a tool of punishment. it really shouldn't be. it gives children a way to calm down by themselves and think about what's wrong with what they did. It prevent situartions from escalating.
Beside, whatever the reason is, to others,hitting is equally bad. Children needs to understand that. If they don't get the same treatment each time they hit, they get confused. They will also leern to find "acceptable" excuses to hit. but the truth is, when it comes to hitting, almost nothing is "acceptable".
