One must spend enough coding to get a sense of programming. Without writing enough code (good or bad), one cannot understand those concepts in Comp Sci.
One kid whose parents I know well had ever read 50% of TJ's comp sci class handouts before his daddy asked me to give him some guidance. What I found was: He knew a lot of things such as object inheritance, but he could not my simple questions because he just read these things. Even for creating a simple for-loop to print numbers 0-99 in a 10 times 10 matrix, he could not accomplish. Such students may be able to do multiple choice questions, but they cannot handle free response questions. So their chances to get a 5 in AP Comp. Sci. are very low.
Your son is right, but coding experience is helpful
