As for last Saturday’s game against the Jaguars, I have to say I was disgusted by the experience and I apologize for not acting on the views of those who saw this game as problematic when it was proposed. In the end, the league mangers, Joel Fagundes and Meghan Waddle, told me we had no choice but to play the Jaguars last Saturday.
I am opposed to elite teams forming to play in rec leagues in general so that is a problem before the game ever starts and that is why I had mixed feelings about agreeing to play the Jaguars and validating the poor judgment of their coaches and parents. The Jaguar parents and coaches, however, also magnified the problem by promoting unsportsmanlike conduct of showboating with 3 pointers in a lopsided game and some of their children responded with a football mockery on the court near the end of the game. I feel sorry for the boys that get that sort of message from the adults in their lives. If any of those parents are your friend, I apologize but this is how I see it. I do not see the fun even for the elite team in pounding a team of mixed talent in a rec league. There are leagues for elite teams and some leagues have divisions based on talent and competition levels. The league we are in is emphatic about the rec nature and the notion of welcoming beginner players. Unfortunately some take advantage of the honor system and use the league for their misguided purposes. I think the league managers need to address this problem more forthrightly in future seasons and I will courteously share my views on this with them after our season ends.
If any of you have something you want to share with me or the league about this or any other matter, I will be happy to present your thoughts when I communicate with the league managers after the season. For now, the two elite teams that we played are not in the 4th grade playoffs so we have no possibility of facing them again. For what it’s worth, I thought the Broncos (the pre-winter break elite team we played) at least played honorably and the parents/coaches did not encourage showboating or cheer for a 3 pointer with the score 40-6. But they still should opt out of rec leagues like ours if that is the team they want to have. I am certain that these teams are not randomly formed like ours.
For our team I am extremely proud of the boys, the effort that they give most of the time, and the good sportsmanship that they are able to maintain under challenging circumstances. I hope that they are having as much fun with basketball and our team as they appear to be from my perspective. And thanks for all your support. See you tonight, Thursday, and/or Saturday.
