1) My computer was a custom-built 5 yrs ago because I wanted 2 monitors hooked up with 1 CPU. The motherboard had problems from day one - the control of the elec supply is peculilar... and tend to hv the "boot up failure" error since day one. The guy who built it spent endless hours tried to fix it to no avail.
2) One of the 2 monitors I bought died after less than 2 yrs usage.
3) The HD issue(s) you learned about.
4) Few years ago our Nikon kept giving us error message about no power supply despite new batteries. Took it to professional photoshop - a part died and it was so rare case, the shop had to order the part from Japan! It costed almost $200.
5) My Toyota Camry had numerous transmission problems came up when the car just had 800 miles on it. They replaced everthing they could think of, that they thought were related to the chips in the control, and only fixed the issues for short while. At 3000 miles, the gear box completely broke down - it could only be driven at gear 2. (Automatic with overdrive).
They ended up replacing the whole transmission - they then found there were hair-line cracks inside it. Toyota demanded the distributor to ship back the defective transmission for their study - they suspected the damage was caused by mal-function chips that issued wrong commands when shifting gears.
6) The next Toyota I bought, developed yet another gear box issue - luckily this time it was a minor one - occasionally it wouldn't let me switch gear - because some electric/electronic controls malfunction but they were much easier to replace this go round.
You see, that is why I generally have great hesitation buying any electronic devices. I dont know if it has anything to do with my own body. When I worked for Hewlett Packard in their sales office in Houston, I am exempt from the annual counting of inventory - even wearing the wrist band, the statics from my body was still considered too strong, and could damage the delicate instruments. (testing instruments for chemicals and gas).
I tend to hv bad luck w/anything electronic I buy
