回复:Revised Trip Plan: Detroit->Arches->Yellowstone ...

It is feasible and enjoyable.

I have a similar experience last summer, 16 days, driving 4400 miles: Silicon Valley -> Salt Lake City -> Arch, Canyon Land(Island In the Sky district), Dead Horse -> (128) Dianosaur MN(stop and go) -> Rocky Mountain -> Wind Cave(stop and go), Custer State Park, Mt. Rushmore -> Badland -> Devile's Tower -> Yellowstone -> Teton -> Idaho Falls, EB-1(first neuclear reactor), Crater of Moon -> Hagerman Fossible Bed NM, Thousand Spring(Id) -> Back Home.

In addition to vista points and short hikes, we managed to hike the 3 mile trial to Delicate Arch, 4+ mile double-O trail in Arch, the Butte(not recommended for old and weak) in Canyonland, visit Mt Rushmore in both evening(for the sunset and movie) and morning, hike a 3+ mile trail in Badland, go aroung Devile's tower and wait the sunset, spend three nights in Yellowstone and hike to the inspiration pint near the Jenny Lake in Great Teton. We also found time to swim in Salt Lake and enjoyed the famous chorus in Church, Salt lake city. In Thousand spring area, we visited two fish hacheries in addition to lots of springs.

Stop and Go is not a bad thing if you drive pas*****y it any way. You need some rest after some driving any way.

However, to do all these was not easy and was lack of flexibility. For example, it was raining and foggy in high elevation in Rock Mountain when I visted there, we couldn't see a thing. To make the matter worse, the horse riding had to be cancelled because of searching for a missing ranger(we made it up in Yellowstone). As a result, we only hike around Bear Lake and visited several visitor centers, one of them the highest visitor center in US.

Also, It need a good planning. We also have to book all the motels/hotels in advance, and bet that driving around are as smooth as expected. Most of the lunch were either prepared and ate at trail head or ate at fast food chain. We did not have time to drive around for a place to sleep or eat.

It should not be a problem to drive a long distance if two drivers can take turn. I sometimes amaze at how reliable modem cars are.

Be aware the Wyoming police, I got a speeding ticket just before I were about to enter a small town, between Devil's tower and Gillet for driving at 65 mile in 50 mile.

Wish you make it.

You have small children, so don't simply compare with others. -阿姗- 给 阿姗 发送悄悄话 阿姗 的博客首页 (1750 bytes) () 03/10/2006 postreply 16:47:17
