Travel to Mexico

I plan to Mexico next Jan. Is Mexico city the best choice? I also want to see Maya site but do not care about beaches, just want to feel the real Mexico. Is it saft if we bring my 4 year old kid? How about hotel, Do I need to stay in 4 stars or regular inn like Holiday Inn is also good enough?
