This is because you bought discounted tickets instead of full fare! These tickets are for leisure travel only. By getting a big discount, you have to accept certain reistrictions.

If you have paid full fare (probably 10X of what you paid), the airline would put you on a flight with similar departure time, even if it means to buy you a ticket from another airline.

BTW, do not even think that you can do what you do in China for similar situation, which is stay inside the airplane and refuse to depart. You will be arrested in no time.
