Technology, wasn't something outside Chinese tradition. Chinese people in the near future will bring it to a degree of extraordinary subtlety and beauty even perfection which would likely inspire the Westerners back. For instance, the space station. No question about it.
Sciences per se, are something quite different. One must appreciate what substantiates the works by an Einstein or a Riemann before he knows what it means by surpassing them. In fact, once one appreciates, he would realize that they are not there to be surpassed but to inspire. He would just respect them then. There are still many commital scientists and mathematicians in the West. You just can't simply "surpass" them though you can outperform them once in awhile.
Try to outperform the better western scientists, this may be the right mindset.
