An irony: The directors made a few more sequels after the movie harvested a great amount of money. The sequels turned out very bad, a betrayal to the original one. The original has a central criticism to capitalism. The directors' decisions on making the sequels are a proof how powerful capitalism is. I always thought the directors betrayed themselves, and perhaps as a consequence to this, they made no more good movies since ... at least to my taste.
The love story is very successful since it is a hidden minor but necessary ingredient (and crucial at the end) in the whole plot which is much grander.
西游记女兒國國王與唐僧的故事有點像，雖然結果不同。
