A simple experiment: Keep looking at the photo for a while, you will grow tired of it very soon. Then do the same with a good painting, say Vermeer's girl with pearl earring. The longer you look at it, the more life comes through. That is the life of the painting but the livliness of the girl.
Photos of a still life (静物) won't even have this quality since a still life doesn't have that kind of human expression in itself . But the opposite quality can be seen in still life paintings, say, by the French painter Chardin. You can do some image search on line and see for yourself.
