爱因斯坦说过一句话：

“Development of Western science is based on two great achievements: the invention of the formal logical system (in Euclidean geometry) by the Greek philosophers, and the discovery of the possibility to find out causal relationships by systematic experiment (during the Renaissance). In my opinion, one has not to be astonished that the Chinese sages have not made these steps. The astonishing thing is that these discoveries were made at all.”

意思是说，很多科学发现还是在中国历史中出现过的，只是严格的理论和系统的实验相结合的这个现代科学的基础没有在中国发展起来。他认为是中国古代的先贤和知识分子的问题。具体什么问题？我想不外乎思维方式和行为方式的问题。儒家好也不好，好的方面自不用说，不好的方面就是让我们的古代知识分子太专注于道德哲学，而忽视了对大自然的观察、研究和实验。中国在春秋战国时期曾经出现过诸子百家争鸣的盛况，可是秦统一以来，很多家都没落了，唯有孔孟之道独大。如果没有统一，也许就象欧洲诸国一样，各国互相竞争，各家互相竞争（比如墨子对自然科学的研究），小国、弱国穷则思变，那么或许科学的理论就会发展起来。另外，我觉得我们的语言文字更趋感性，而西方的语言文字更适合理性的发展。这没考证过，只是个见。
