When Einstein was about to conclude the theory of general relativity, he already got the right equation, the so called field equation, but it yielded a solution of an expanding universe. In order to get a "stable" universe as a valid solution, Einstein added an extra term in the equation to make it work the way he desired. Yet later observations by astronomers confirmed the earlier version of the equation. Einstein accordingly confessed that he had fallen victim to ancient Greek philosophy that the universe must be static.
This is a case of brainwashing. The truth revealed later is considered " counterintuitive". In reality, what it counters is the effect of past brainwashing which had become one's intuition, that is, one's beliefs.
There have been plenty of this type of counterintuitives in physics and mathematics along their modern development.
