Both my hu*****and and I are super fans of Garrison Keillor's A Prairie Home Companion. So I was ecstatic when my hu*****and told me late last year that he would be coming to San Francisco in January to do two shows. He was tasked to get the tickets.
Forever the procrastinator, my hu*****and had not done anything when I checked in with him in December. Luckily, we got two tickets together for the January 5 show, not the best seats though, since both shows were already almost sold out at the time.
The plan for the day was to drop off both kids at my parents' early in the morning, and then we would drive to the city, do a little shopping, have lunch and then go to the show. It was a very good plan, but as most of you with small kids know well, getting out of the door with kids would rarely go as planned. And we failed to prove otherwise this time once again. When we got to the city, it was already lunch time, so all I could do was to make a short stop at the Saks and then went straight to find a lunch place.
Driving in to the city - beautiful (at least to me) skyline of the city on the bay
While waiting for my hu*****and to pick me up after coming out of Saks, I snapped this picture of some people trying to gain momentum to impeach President O'Bama.
The show would be at the War Memorial Opera House, so we decided to lunch in that neighborhood.
There were a variety of restaurants in the neighborhood, and we wandered into this one.
A cozy and warm place. Most of the patrons were seated by the window.
We occupied a small table also by the window.
One of the interestingly shaped glass bottles, placed along the window sill, caught my hu*****and's fancy.
Waiting for the food
It started with a plate of complimentary bread and dip..
My hu*****and ordered the lunch combo which included a glass of wine, a side salad and a main item.
The main item my hu*****and picked was pappardelle pasta in a meaty sauce.
The pasta was handmade, and both of us swore that the difference was there in a good way, especially the texture.
Mine was simpler, a pork tenderloin panini. What made it very delicious was the grilled pear, and it was a perfect combination with the tenderloin.
It was a good lunch. We were getting ready to leave for the show.
This was the back of the opera house, where we went in.
It was a sold out show. By the time we got there, people had started piling in. It was interesting to witness first hand the demographics of the fan base. Among the many factors, age is probably the easiest thing to discern. By that measure, his fan base is definitely not a young crowd, something I had never thought of before. If I have to put out a number, I would say perhaps an average age of 50. I jokingly told my hu*****and that we were definitely the younglings in this crowd.
The poster in the lobby..
Beside this poster was a table where you could write notes to your friends and families. Some of those would be randomly picked to read out on the show later. My hu*****and wrote one to our kids and put it in the basket with the hope that it would be picked.
For those of you who are not often tuned in to NPR, A Prairie Home Companion is a variety radio show hosted by Garrison Keillor. It's often broadcasted from its base in St. Paul, but they also do so on the road. What we enjoy most about the show are the skits that are a frequent feature of the show. The phone conversation between Duane (Garrison Keillor) and his mom is forever entertaining; Garrison's monologue on Lake Wobegan (his fictional hometown), where all the women are strong, all the men are good-looking and all the children are above average, makes me laugh every time; there is also "Guy Noir, private eye" etc etc.
For this time, we did not get "Guy Noir, private eye", but Duane did get a call from his mom..
It was a two hour well spent!
We went to my parents' for the kids afterwards, and also had a simple dinner there - hand made noodle from scratch!
By the time we got back home, both kids fell asleep.
Good night, everyone.
